[ART] Stories that reach to your soul (The importance of character creation) PART 1

There are many reasons a story is so god darn awesome and we tend to ask why... these are some of the reason I've recolected for this day's blog.

1) The feeling, the believing

This is something made ahead by the characters and how well the story is explained.

Trauma Team is an amazingly well done story.

This is one hell of a good example for this blog.

The story is so damn good that you don't really notice that the graphics are only a bit passable in the game and that the cinematics actually look a little bit like animatics. How does it work? Simple.

You get to feel the story, there is a drama in the story too. Everyone tends to have trouble in this series and everyone is striving for their goal, every single character in this game stands out by themself.

Exactly, the ones that make you trasmit the emotion mostly in a story are the characters.

Here is an excerpt from a cinematic of Trauma team from Doctor 2 chapter 5 Mournful Hero.

Another excerpt from Doctor 1 chapter 6 Blade of Resolve

The reason of why these characters work is for one reason:

They feel ALIVE

All these characters feel alive because:

- They don't have all these wacky superpowers (which is the biggest common mistake in anime)
- They can and WILL die eventually even if it's out of story (A mistake Marvel/DC comics make)
- They have flaws (A mistake normal people with their so called OCs do)
- They have an objective
- They have an inner obstacle that makes them fail (something I learned today)
- All their personalities are different (another mistake in anime)

And even if they have some special abilities:

-One of the doctors is actually a superhero
-One of the doctors can hear the last words of dead people.

They are still believeble because of this, because they are very well built to the point that they could exist in real life.

and also, It's quite important to have an ideal voice acting (shown in a later blog) because it helps to get a connectivity with the story and the characters itself.

Let's see other examples of good characters:

Ah, harry potter, of course he is an excelent character. In fact, almost every character from the series is good.

Even if you don't believe it, Itachi is a very well built character himself. If you have seen Naruto yourself you would understand his internal drama that he has with his brother.

You might possibly not know this character... she is Namah and she belongs in the Dreamkeepers graphic novel saga This character is simply amazing.

This is a little extra in the blog.

The audience always think about how the character is based un what it looks like and also a bit of ASSUMPTION.

And I will give you a simple example showing a pony character... Derpy

(as a side note, Background characters in developments are NO LESS IMPORTANT than cannon characters, they all must have their story and identity)

This character just showed up in the background with those eyes (although standing) and that was it... and amazingly internet could sit down and assume most of what this character was.

The name, her job, her past story even that she is a little clumsy (which was them showed in a later episode) ... and a lot of other stuff

And the creator of the series (Lauren Faust) even had in her mind what the character's name was even if it's never said in the story, EVER.

It's important to build your characters well and think about what they will do... and if you are unsure about your character, behave like your character for a day, see if it feels like the character is doing ok.

Anyways, that was my today's blog...

see you all soon!

Sukotto.

  1. LMAO NO, JUST NO
Harry Potter is a gary-stu, Itachi conflict is cheap and cliche and the characters in Dreamkeepers are high-school stereotypes.

And character with a goal CAN be bland (Tiana and other Disney's characters)

Oh! and not all anime characters have superpowers, you genius. How many anime have you seen? Naruto? Bleach? those are typical shonen :D try Monster,20 Century boys,Evangelion,Cowboy Bebop,Ghost in the shell,Akira,Black Jack (is about a doctor and much better than Trauma Center),Samurai Champloo,Bokurano,Lady Oscar,Gundam,Conan etc.

    Meh...

For starters, Book better than the movie in harry potter.

Clitches and stereotypes are good to use if you doon't overexceed it... if you are one of those people that thinks that clitche shouldn't exist, you should probably forget about writing or doing anything fairly decent... it helps to let the audience to auto identify themselves depending on the character.

FYI The dreamkeepers characters are VERY FAR from highschool stereotypes.

As for anime, I'm talking about animie in the actual time only Thank you very much.

    Trauma Center =/= Trauma Team.

first of all, you have to stop saying those words. you know "gary-stu" and "stereotypes". you don't know what they really mean nor how to use them to do real critique. if you want to say all those things GIVE ME SOME EVIDENCE OF THAT and not only some evidence, give mayor examples and compare them with other things that actually proves what you sre saying because what you just said was only an opinion.

second, why are you talking about anime? he never said all characters in anime had superpowers, what he said is that anime used superpowers a lot without any reason which sometimes makes the characters bland as they only focus on superpowers. he is not an expert on anime, he never really cared about it. his knowledge in anime is not great so he just uses what he knows. anime is not common knowledge and you can't critizise someone just because he doesn't know about anime.

finally, of those anime that you gave: gundam HAS superpowers, fricking giant robots that can do whatever they want(evangelion is included also); akira is about psychic powers; etc.

stop being a douche and start realizing what you write.
